Use when

Teams running large MySQL-compatible workloads that have outgrown a single primary and want safe, branchable schema changes.

Avoid when

Cost-sensitive small projects — the minimum pricing and lack of a free tier make it hard to justify for side projects.

What is PlanetScale?

PlanetScale is a managed MySQL platform built on Vitess, the sharding layer that powers YouTube. It introduced schema branching — developers create a branch, run migrations there, then merge schema changes via deploy requests, like a pull request for the database. Removed its free tier in 2024, and in 2025 launched PlanetScale for Postgres, expanding beyond MySQL.
